Prof Pauli Miettinen talk will focus on a topic shared by all PhD students : How to survive your PhD.

Through his experiences as a former PhD student and as a current researcher and supervisor, he will address and give some advice about issues most of PhD students face on the bumpy road to graduation.

Biography

Prof Pauli Miettinen is a professor of data science at University of Eastern Finland School of Computing, at Kuopio campus. Formerly he was a senior researcher at Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken, Germany. He is also a docent (adjunct professor) at University of Helsinki. He studies algorithmic data analysis, and he is interested to both theory and applications thereof. He leads the Algorithmic Data Analysis research group at UEF. His main research has been in the fields of Boolean and (sub-) tropical matrix and tensor factorizations, redescription mining, and social network analysis.
