Short Bio

Kin Lung (KL) Chan has a PhD in Electronic Engineering and started his career as a research scientist in one of the Crown Research Institutes in NZ.   Over the past two decades, he has been involved in the development of many technologies, from sensing technologies for natural products, through to nano-scale thermal insulators, to data science.  He is currently the Team Leader of the Data Vision Team in Callaghan Innovation,  leading a team of data scientists and computer vision engineers to solve real-world problems for NZ companies. In his previous roles in Callaghan Innovation,  KL also managed the Smart Structure Team and the ICT Team.  KL is passionate about data and enjoys the diversity and complexity of the challenges presented to him and his team.

Abstract

Callaghan Innovation is a government agency supporting hi-tech businesses in NZ.  The Data Vision Team is one of the technical teams within the Research and Technical Services Division of Callaghan Innovation, specializing in Data Science and Computer Vision.  The team provides a range of technical services to assist NZ businesses with technology innovation through using data.
In this talk,  KL will give an overview of the Data Vision Team introducing the team’s research and its services.  He will also share a few lessons learned from solving real-world data science problems for NZ companies, in particular,  why some data science projects fail to deliver their promises despite good technical outcomes.
